This is a cased pair of percussion pistols by John Manton, serial number 11173, made around 1845 in 54 caliber with 9-inch barrels. Both barrels have been cleaned, leaving roughly 30 to 40 percent of the original finish, and the locks have been re-casehardened. The case is in very good condition and holds a good flask; the label inside the case is a reproduction.
The set is sold as what it is: a percussion pair that has had its barrels cleaned and its locks re-hardened, sitting in a very good case with a replacement label. For an Illinois collector it is a display pair rather than a shooting pair, and the surviving finish, the flask and the case are the points to weigh. The pistols transfer through a dealer as handguns, so the buyer must be 21 with a FOID, and the dealer holds the set for 72 hours before pickup.
