U.S. Eagle Head Infantry Officers sword

A U.S. eagle head infantry officer's sword that the supplier dates to 1821 through 1840. The straight blade measures 31.25 inches, with the sword running 37 inches overall. Deep blue survives on about two thirds of the blade, carrying etched and gilded foliage with a spread-winged eagle and shield at the center; the bright areas show light oxidation. The handle is checkered and fan-carved bone, and it has a crack running top to bottom on the right side. A knuckle chain links the eagle's head to a stacked-ball counter guard. The brass scabbard is good with minor wear.

An Illinois collector of early American officer's swords will weigh the surviving blue and gilt etching against the cracked bone grip, both of which are stated plainly here so there are no surprises on arrival. Display it out of direct sun to protect the gilding, and avoid handling the grip by the cracked side.
